Parfois, on emploie simplement la dénomination « Tri-State ». Le terme est utilisé dans les domaines de la publicité et de l’information, mais il est aussi courant dans le langage quotidien. Le « New York Tri-State Area » inclus les états du New Jersey, de New York et du Connecticut (dont le terme « tri-state »), se limitant au périmètre bien desservi par les transports en commun vers et depuis Manhattan. Le terme se réfère également aux lieux qui recoivent les informations télévisées ou diffusées par radio depuis Manhattan. Ce terme permet l’inclusion de lieux situés en périphérie de Manhattan, qui maintiennent néanmoins une proximité importante avec elle. Manhattan Manhattan est une île, et un quartier de New York City, avec une population de 1 611 581 dans un espace de 59.47 km². C’est le canton le plus peuplé des Etats-Unis, avec 66 940 habitants pour 25,646 km², et le plus économiquement privilégié, avec un revenu par habitant dépassant les $100,000.00.  Manhattan est un centre commercial, financier et culturel majeur. Introduction to the New York Metro area The Tri-State Area” The term “Tri-State Region” is commonly used in the area surrounding New York City to refer to the greater metropolitan area. Sometimes the phrase is shortened to "the Tri-State" or "the Tri-State Area". The term is usually found in advertising and the broadcast news media, but it is also used in common speech. Roughly speaking, the New York Tri-State area encompasses the populated areas in the states of New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut (hence the term "tri-state") that are within an average commuting distance of Manhattan, either by car or rail. Alternatively, the term refers to the coverage area of the broadcast television stations that operate from Manhattan. An advantage of the term is that it allows the inclusion of more outlying rural areas that are still within commuting distance of Manhattan.
