Ses quartiers Manhattan est composé de nombreux quartiers, à visages multiples. Par exemple, certaines dénominations identifient une position géographique (Upper East Side, Midtown). D’autres se concentrent sur une ethnicité (Chinatown, Little Italy). TriBeCa est un exemple d’acronyme qui signifie « TRIangle BElow CAnal Street ». Il existe aussi SoHo ("SOuth of HOuston") et Nolita ("NOrth of Little ITAly"). D’autres ont ete inspires par l’Histoire: le nom Harlem vient de l’époque hollandaise coloniale. Haarlem était une ville néerlandaise. SoHo est connu pour ses boutiques de designers trendy. Greenwich Village, la Lower East Side et le East Village sont associés à la culture urbaine bohème. Chelsea abrite l’industrie de l’art, et la vie nocturne. Washington Heights est le quartier des immigrants de la République Dominicaine. Introduction to the New York Metro area The Tri-State Area” The term “Tri-State Region” is commonly used in the area surrounding New York City to refer to the greater metropolitan area. Sometimes the phrase is shortened to "the Tri-State" or "the Tri-State Area". The term is usually found in advertising and the broadcast news media, but it is also used in common speech. Roughly speaking, the New York Tri-State area encompasses the populated areas in the states of New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut (hence the term "tri-state") that are within an average commuting distance of Manhattan, either by car or rail. Alternatively, the term refers to the coverage area of the broadcast television stations that operate from Manhattan. An advantage of the term is that it allows the inclusion of more outlying rural areas that are still within commuting distance of Manhattan. Manhattan” Manhattan is an island borough within New York City, with a 2006 population of 1,611,581 living in a land area of 22.96 square miles (59.47  km²), it is the most densely populated county in the United States at 66,940 residents per square mile (25,846/km²). It is also the wealthiest county in the United States, with a 2005 personal per capita income above $100,000.00. Manhattan is a major commercial, financial, and cultural center of the United States, and to some extent, the world.  Most major radio, television, and telecommunications companies in the United States are based here, as well as many news, magazine, book, and other media publishers. Manhattan has many famous landmarks, tourist attractions, museums, and universities. It is also home to the headquarters of the United Nations. Manhattan has the largest central business district in the United States which is home to both the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ as well as the largest number of corporate headquarters in the nation. It’s neighborhoods Manhattan's many neighborhoods are not named according to any particular convention. Some names denote a geographical location (the Upper East Side. Midtown), or are ethnically descriptive (Chinatown, Little Italy). Others are acronyms, such as TriBeCa (for "TRIangle BElow CAnal Street"), SoHo ("SOuth of HOuston"), or NoLIta ("NOrth of Little ITaly"). Harlem is a name from the Dutch colonial era after Haarlem, a city in the Netherlands. Some neighborhoods, such as SoHo, are more commercial in nature and known for upscale shopping. Others, such as Greenwich Village, the Lower East Side and the East Village, are associated with the "Bohemian" subculture. Chelsea is the center of New York's art industry and nightlife. Washington Heights is a vibrant neighborhood of immigrants from the Dominican Republic. Manhattan's Chinatown has a dense population of people of Chinese descent. The Upper West Side is often characterized as more intellectual and creative, in contrast to the old money and conservative values of the Upper East Side, one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the United States.
